Race Wrap - AMF GT3 Dev Series R3

Sunday night saw us hit the track for round 3 of the CM Security - AMF GT3 Development Series at the famous Nurburgring Grand-Prix-Strecke on the BES/WEC layout.  4 of our drivers took part in the race and all qualified well filling 1st, 3rd, 4th and 13th on the grid.  Trent Thomas, Andrew Gaines, Warren Pickering and Brock Cremer as they lined up.  Series regulars Blake Neck, Craig Edwards and Alex Bird were unable to take part for various reasons, the latter two were overseeing the final stints of our teams effort in the Daytona 24 hour race.

The start of the 45 minute event was mired by an unlucky collision just behind the leaders which caused a car to rocket down the grass on the inside and take out leader Gary Hamilton who managed to jump Thomas at the start.  Pickering managed a brilliant start and was collected by the now spinning Hamilton as chaos fell at turn 1.  Thomas and Gaines were able to dodge through the mayhem although Thomas did not get away completely unscathed, however damage was mostly superficial so a stop for repairs was not required.  Cremer also got through the carnage and found himself in 5th place as the safety car was called.  Pickering took advantage of the slower pace to pit for repairs before rejoining the rear of the field.

After the restart the second place car was penalized for causing the first lap incident promoting Gaines into second place behind Thomas.  FSR cars would occupy the first 2 position on track for almost the entire race.  Cremer worked his way to 3rd place by the mid way point with team cars now filling the top 3 positions.  Pickering was also working his way through the field and had moved from 25th to 5th within 11 laps.

As the pitstops played out Cremer made an aggressive move to complete a pass on pit entry catching a napping lapped car by surprise.  Pickering pitted slightly early and dropped back to 15th while Thomas and Gaines both pitted together, the latter taking on slightly too much fuel.

In the end Thomas claimed victory for the 3rd time this year and for the 7th consecutive time in this series.  Gaines held out a fast charging Hamilton to finish in 2nd place, 15 seconds behind Thomas.  Pickering managed to finish all the way up in 4th place with Cremer taking out 6th with a solid drive.  Fusion SimRacing cars filling 4 of the top 6 places.

Special mention must be given to both Alex Bird and Craig Edwards as both drivers showed impressive pace during practice sessions and the race could have played out very differently had they been able to compete.
